Your location is not the product

MoonScan needs a rough location to calculate the Moon and fetch a local forecast. It does not need an account, a profile, or a precise trail of where you have been.

What is stored

  • A first-party cookie stores your selected location name, rounded coordinates (0.01°, about 1 km), time zone and country.
  • A second cookie stores display preferences: 12/24-hour clock and °C/°F.
  • There are no accounts, advertising identifiers, third-party analytics scripts or cross-site trackers.

Geolocation

The browser geolocation prompt appears only after you press “Use my location once”. The coordinates are sent to MoonScan's own geocoding route to resolve a time zone, then rounded before being stored. You can use the entire site without granting permission by searching for a city.

URLs and sharing

When you choose a location, the home page URL includes rounded coordinates, a display name and the time zone. If you share that URL, those rounded coordinates are shared too. City pages use canonical /moon/city URLs and do not include coordinates. You can always remove the query string or clear the location cookie.

Third-party requests

Forecast and city search requests go to Open-Meteo. Those requests necessarily include the rounded coordinates or search text. Open-Meteo's own policies apply to its service. MoonScan does not send your location to analytics, monitoring or advertising platforms.

  • Astronomy Engine — Moon and Sun positions, phases, rise and set times. MIT licensed.
  • Open-Meteo — Hourly cloud cover, precipitation probability and temperature. CC BY 4.0.
  • Open-Meteo Geocoding — City search. Place data derived from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).
  • IAU / NASA — Lunar feature names and Apollo landing site coordinates.

Logs and retention

The site does not write application logs containing coordinates. Hosting and network providers process requests to deliver the site and may keep standard operational logs under their own policies. Preference cookies expire after one year or when you clear them. Weather responses are cached at the edge for up to 20 minutes; geocoding results are cached for a day.
