About MoonScan

A clearer answer to “should I look up tonight?”

Most Moon sites give you a phase percentage and a wall of numbers. MoonScan starts with the decision: is the Moon above the horizon from where you are, is the sky likely to cooperate, and when is the most sensible time to step outside?

The answer is location-aware, but not location-greedy. Manual city search works without permission. Geolocation is optional, one-shot, and rounded before it is stored. There is no account, no feed, no onboarding, and no login button.

What it does

  • Calculates the current phase, illumination, altitude and rise/set times.
  • Scores the next 24 hours from cloud, altitude, darkness and precipitation.
  • Recommends a contiguous viewing window and explains the reasoning.
  • Lists principal lunar phases in local time with an honest visibility note.
  • Offers a curated lunar map and observing notes.

What it deliberately does not do

  • Promise clear skies or a scientifically perfect viewing score.
  • Claim eclipse or conjunction visibility before the geometry is validated.
  • Use a stock Moon photo as if it were tonight's phase.
  • Sell your location, run third-party analytics, or require an account.
  • Pretend a missing forecast is a clear sky.

Design and engineering

MoonScan is a Next.js App Router application deployed to Cloudflare Workers through OpenNext. Astronomy is computed with Astronomy Engine; forecasts come from Open-Meteo. The Moon disc is generated vector art, not a photograph: its terminator is derived from the actual phase angle, while surface detail and orientation are explicitly labelled schematic.

The visual language is deliberately restrained: a dark editorial sky, a single lunar ice-blue accent, and warm gold reserved for events. Motion is minimal and respects reduced-motion preferences.
